UGC Recognises GNLU Unique Legal and Interdisciplinary Education Model & Allocates 9.67 crore Rs Grant

University Grants Commission of India has allocated a grant of 9.67 crore Rs (2.1 million USD / 1.5 million Euros) to GNLU under the 11th Plan. UGC grant includes, among others, 5 crore Rs for general development of GNLU, 4.60 crore Rs for various education, research, extension and training schemes and 5 lakh Rs for quality control and monitoring programs and activities.
UGC recognized that the “GNLU has created a unique learning environment for the students to achieve their professional objectives. Research and training coupled with solid grounding in theory prepares them for various segments of employment – be it judiciary, academic or legal profession…to produce professionals who are technically sound, professionally competent and socially relevant. GNLU has also developed an extensive mid-term plan (2009-2014) with clear goals and objectives.” UGC also took note of the GNLU role as a nodal agency to enhance overall standards of training, research, education and extension for 32 law colleges. UGC recommended GNLU to implement all terms and conditions as per the UGC Pay Scale and the 6th Pay Commission for the academic and administrative staff members.
The UGC also observed that “GNLU has a unique and innovative model of legal education in the country. It imparts merit based admission, society-oriented curriculum and modern pedagogy…is also engaged in serious qualitative research law and interdisciplinary subjects.” UGC also recognized GNLU research in the areas of reduction of backlog of cases, law, development and politics as well as world trade and competition.
Recognising that GNLU “is the second lowest in the fee structure amongst all other national law universities and therefore,more financial aid would go a long way in making this as a model university in terms of access, equity, quality and relevance.”
